Part 1  of  2

This week I have been exploring the supposedly non-funky dance routines of the various Top of the Pops dance troupes. You know the ones: Pan’s People, Ruby Flipper, Legs and Co etc. Of course the TOTP dancers should never (ever) be confused with the legendary Arlene Phillips dance troupe Hot Gossip made famous through their appearances on The Kenny Everett Show. They were always more ‘cult’, as before being spotted by the producers of the Kenny Everett Show on a drunken night in Soho, Hot Gossip spent two years performing at a club in Jermyn Street. With TOTP having been on the BBC there is lots and lots of footage around but unfortunately watching most of it is just hard work with so so dance moves, meh costuming and not so good tracks actually danced to – BUT being the crate digger I have been doing some serious digging for you to find the rare gold – I also got a bit side-tracked and went looking at the sub-genre of ‘TOTP dancer footage re-used and re-mixed’ as there is also true buried treasure to be found there – shall I just say Trentemoller …enjoy…

In Part 2 join me as we explore the incredible funky dancers of Detroit’s New Dance Show, The Scene, House Countdown and some other US funky dance shows
